She Lost $500,000—Then Divorced Her Money & Married Her Mindset | Dr. Tabitha Russell

Ask Jessi about your communication challenge...
What would you do if one business decision cost you $500,000?
Would you give up—or would you turn the lesson into a blueprint that could help thousands of other people avoid the same mistake?
In this powerful Everybody Can't Go Convos episode, host Jessi Holley sits down with Dr. Tabitha Russell during the Leadership Experience Tour (LET) 2026 for a conversation about money mindset, wealth intelligence, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, multiple streams of income, purpose, and building a business that serves people—not desperation.
Dr. Tabitha Russell shares the story behind one of her most powerful lessons: “I divorced my money and married my mindset.”
After losing $500,000, her home, cars, and other assets while raising four young children, Dr. Russell realized that although she had lost tangible things, she still had something incredibly valuable—her knowledge and her voice.
Instead of allowing the experience to become her defeat, she turned the lesson into purpose.
Today, she teaches entrepreneurs how to identify their signature message, turn their knowledge into products and services, create multiple streams of income, build visibility, and develop the mindset necessary to sustain success.

And we laugh. Happy Thursday, and welcome to another Everybody Can't Go Convo. I am your host, Jesse Holly, and we are still live at the Leadership Experience Tour. And I have with me Dr. Tabitha Russell. And we are going to dig into information on being powerful on purpose, talking about the summit, and also why she divorced her money and married her mindset. This is about to be a dynamic interview for you here. I've been excited about this for the past two days. So let's get into it. Welcome, Dr. Tat.
SPEAKER_00Well, thank you so much for allowing me to be here. I'm super excited.
SPEAKER_01Same, same. I'm so glad that you took the time to come back around and sit in with us on this. So I'm like, oh, I don't even know which one I want to start on. Okay. I'm going to go ahead and take you guys through a nice little crescendo. So we'll start off with talking about the powerful on purpose summit. What is the summit? Who is it for? What was the inception?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so the powerful on purpose summit is a platform that I put together that the Lord gave me a vision from. And he was saying, you're doing it. You're out there, you're speaking, you're on international platforms, and you're sharing with the world your signature message upon wealth intelligence and financial literacy. And so, along with that, it allowed me the opportunity to really put together a platform that helps seekers to realize what their signature message is, and we ultimately help them to make multiple streams of income from it. But the summit itself allows them to be able to share that message real time in front of a live audience as well as virtually as well. So their message gets the opportunity to go around the world in that day after they've done all the hard work of putting it together.
SPEAKER_01That is amazing. So, and that's one of the uh the themes that I've been noticing while being here at the Leadership Experience Tour. People who have decided to be brave and share their story. And now you've created a stage and a platform for people to not only share their story, but you already have it set up so that their story is able to be disseminated throughout the world and get to all of these places, all of these far corners where if we were holding our story into ourselves, holding our experience into ourselves, then it it wouldn't really travel too far. That's right. Even if we were doing it on our own.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so one of the things that I've seen by me being out here and traveling and going internationally is that there's some gaps in the industry, um, partially around investing yourself, right? Like a lot of people will get out there a little bit, we'll get little results, and then all of a sudden we go back into our comfort zone where we hide that message and we feel like that, oh nobody's gonna, you know, support me or or whatever. And so we created a whole ecosystem around it, and that's where the multiple streams of income comes in, is that in order for you to reach a place called success, whatever that may mean to you, because yours may be a little bit different than mine, however, there needs to be some consistency, and then you also have to build up your visibility as well. So we don't just say, okay, come bring that message and we're gonna put you on stage. No, it's a whole process, it's a whole training platform that we help you to go from the vision and the exception of your message to where you now have products and services as a result of it. So for me, it's personal. Um, I've been an entrepreneur for well over 20 years, right? So during that, during that process, I made one decision, lost a half million dollars to house the cars, had four small babies at the time, and I didn't know that my contracts needed a contract. I didn't know I needed a lawyer or accountant on my staff, right? So these were some of the things that I said I would never want somebody else to go through. The one thing that I knew that I had after I lost all that stuff was the knowledge that I that I had studied for, as well as my voice. So I knew that I could take my voice and help somebody else. Because what I realized is that what you're looking for is already looking for you. You just have to tap into that, as um we we like to say, right, go go run after it, but it will also find you because people are looking for what it is that you have to offer, but you gotta put it out there, right? I said turn your open sign on in order for people to be able to know that you're the answer to their prayers.
SPEAKER_01That is amazing, and you know, with with your experience, I didn't know that. And that's I'm like, wow, that is wild. And I mean, hats out to you for choosing to take that experience and being willing to and determined to help other people to shield others from being from going through something similar or going through that same thing. Uh, I can I can just imagine that there are so many people who like if they took that that type of ail, whether they took it as a loss or a lesson, that they would just be like, you know what? No, this is mine to have. I'm not talking about it. It ain't nobody's business, I'm not helping nobody do nothing. And um for you to go through that and grow through that and to come out on the other side not being bitter and and being like, okay, this is what I'm turning it into, so that I can make sure nobody else falls into the same trap, that is is very admirable. And I'm like, to you, sis, because I'm I'm like, that's why I don't gamble. Because I'm like, if I lose more than $10, I'm like, mm-mm, I'm ready to go. I'm going over here to the because I could I could be drinking this, I could be wanting to be surprised, I could be eating this $10. But for you to have overcome so much and still be so so full of life and so full of that spirit to help other people, that truly is amazing and a testament to the type of person that you are. And so I think that is amazing. Now, I want to remind uh back a little bit when you were talking about the the program structure so that people are able to leave with the actual products and services and things that make sense because you have uh created the blueprint in the process. And so for flight attendants and pilots, listen up.
SPEAKER_00Come on.
SPEAKER_01I need you guys to listen up. Y'all know for those of us that got a real low ATC, you know, you know why this is sounding real good to me because all of those little specific, all the stuff that I would miss, then I'm like, y'all, find you an ATC to do it and submit to them. It sounds like your program is is built with all of those, all of those, the the little checkpoints, all of the the little bulleted lists, so that you're you're actually guiding people and basically holding their hand through, taking the knowledge that they already have to get through the hard part. You're holding their hand through through well for those of us that that's the hard part, uh um, depending on your personality style, but for those of us that that is the hard part, just getting through all of those chest analysis. Is is that like your personality style just in general? That you're one of those like super analytical, you cross every T, dot every I, look at the big picture, and want to know everything about every corner?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I am naturally a dreamer and visionary. Okay, right. So for me, I can look at this and be like, this is really nice, but what else do we do with it? Right now, I would take this idea or this model, and I'm already laying it out 20 steps down the road, right? And so it doesn't matter what you do, if but you it starts with a passion, right? It starts with having a dream, a vision, or whatever. So it starts with us having like that real conversation, and sometimes uh it may look like you know, figure eights laid out on top of each other because you know, you got one idea here and one there, and it intersects and it cross and it goes back over, all that stuff. We get to some point in clarity, right? So I lived, I grew up in inner city, Philadelphia, right? Well, when I did, I had the opportunity to participate in the gifted and talented program that allowed me to go out to the suburbs. That meant that I got up every day, I caught public transportation, a bus, right? Set up all the way to the end, got on the L train just to get my to my school bus, right? As I'm going though, I'm riding past these big houses, past these fancy cars in the driveway. I'm like three percent of the whole uh culture of the school, and my counterparts are driving up in these nice whips, right? These nice cars, and so I'm like, what is uh happening here? Like, what did your parents do? Oh, my dad is the dentist of the town, my mom is the banker, that kind of stuff, right? So for me, I thought that entrepreneurial ship was the way to go, right? So in school, I'm like, I had two goals. One was to change my name because I didn't like Tabitha, that's a whole story by itself, and then secondly, it was to get to a place of comfortability to be able to afford the things that I I saw was possible, but it wasn't available to me, right? And so for the program itself and the structure around the program, because I do this on a regular basis, I understand the things that you have to pay a lot of money for that sometimes, if not stewarded right, could make you feel like you're not getting anywhere, you're not doing anything. So the reason why we teach multiple streams of income is when I lost everything, I only had one stream, so I was dependent, everything was built around that one thing in that basket, and so for individuals that are ready to take that pathway, it starts with that vision, and then we lay out the structure along with it. Now I have a blueprint that I will hold you to, but then also sometimes that path getting there sometimes we look different for all the people that's in the group. Because I tell everybody you're the best version of you today without any help.
SPEAKER_01That is so sweet, and I'm gonna have to tell myself that when I feel like um I'm being a mess.
SPEAKER_00But if you want to go further than that, right, having somebody to come in and lie arms with you allows you to get the blueprint, but tap into acceleration because you don't have to go through the same things that I went through in order to get there, right? So because I'm gonna tell you, look, baby, I'm gonna need you not to go down that path because you you're gonna hit a brick wall real quick.
SPEAKER_01You're barking up the wrong tree.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And so that's where I found the beauty in all of this, is first of all, just having that structure and a plan together, having somebody to hold you accountable. But then the other part of it is that falling in love with investing in yourself, your self-development matters more than anything because if we're trying to serve out of an empty basket, I don't want you handed out depression, anxiety, stress, all those things come in because we're trying to do the most and and there's nothing else there. So you scrape in the bottom of the barrel just trying to be your most authentic, right? And sometimes that can be hard. And in some of us come from a hustle culture, the grind and all of that, right? Well, that don't mean that you have to be worried about doing it, you don't have to be frustrated while doing it, right? We should love what we do. I absolutely enjoy getting up every day and doing what I do because I find that I want to see people win. Right? Sometimes when they don't see it, right? When they call and they like, I can't do this. Uh first of all, bring it all the way back in and let's have a conversation and revisit the plan, right? And so being able to hold them accountable to what it is that they want, I found that it allows them to now get up and have that same level of happiness every single day because they figured out what it is that really makes their heart sing. And it's through just having a process and a strategy.
SPEAKER_01Now, y'all know why I say that sounds good. What does that sound like? Write that vision, make it plain, make it plain and make sure that you revisit it so that you know where you're going. And like you say, revisit it when you're having that doubtful moment or that down moment that it's like, I don't know why I'm doing it. Yes, you do. You just look at get get back to the vision so that you can remember why uh you are doing this and why you uh you embarked on this journey or started out on this journey in the first place. Now, um let's move over to what it got even juicier. It got even juicier. Okay, so I divorced my money and married my mindset.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Talk to me about that. Because with a title like that, how can you not pick that book up?
SPEAKER_00So I wrote the book back in 2021. And it was during the time, of course, we're in COVID, right? Um, and and a lot of times because I teach wealth intelligence or financial literacy, as a lot of people like to call it, I find that money is the number one thing that we all can identify with, right? Every culture, every nationality around the world, money has the ability to affect us all. However, that's also the number one thing that people use to identify us and classify us and that kind of stuff, right? And so we we usually hold on to that really tight. And when money gets tight, it seems like the world and everything else attached to it just crumbles. However, when we detach ourselves from money from a business standpoint and we really want to serve people through our mindset and being having that true happiness, money doesn't matter. I tell people that money is a byproduct of good products and services. People will not question your price when they see that your product is what you say that it is, and they get real results, their service, like because think about it. When we go to a restaurant and we sit there, we nine times out of ten, we're gonna look at how long it took them to greet us, how long it took them to bring our drinks. Oh, let's not talk about how long it took to get the food, right? Because that's the best part, and that's why we go. So we look at the money, but I believe in some ways you get what you pay for, right? But when it's you doing the offering of the product or service, now if you're focused on having a good product and providing good service, the money naturally flows. So teaching people to divorce, going after the money, right? Let me go get the bag and really wrap their minds around having that good product and service changes the game altogether. So in the book, it teaches how to create multiple streams of income as well as how to now um move away from just putting a product out there just to say that you have one. Okay.
SPEAKER_01And that makes a lot of sense um when you're thinking about entrepreneurship these days, uh, because I know that uh some people go into it for the wrong reasons, and some people they go into it with their whole heart. Um uh they they don't necessarily have the the proper direction and uh know all of the you know, all the things to do to quote unquote do it right. That's right. And um it is very easy with I I hear it all the time, and I'm like, don't just quit your job and say, I'm gonna do this thing.
SPEAKER_00I wish you would. Look, not on my watch. Not yet, anyways.
SPEAKER_01Right, right. Okay. Um, to make a to make a a financially healthy transition. Now, I do get it that sometimes uh life be life in and situations come up that pop up where you know you get laid off, lose your employment, things happen where it's like you have no choice but to it's like, oh crap, it's sink or swim right now. Yeah. But um there's I I see all of the all of this rhetoric all the time about like, oh, well, you can't build your business if if you if you would work for somebody else, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I'm like, don't, don't do that. Because it can put you in a a level of uh desperation where uh as a as a salesperson, people can feel and can sense the vibe and hear the desperation, and you're trying to sell, well, I got this, I got this, and I got this. Like, which one do you want? And it's like, sir, ma'am, I don't want any of it. Please get away from me. And it is very, I would say, very easy to obtain products and services from someone who don't seem like they're just trying to sell you something. And you know, that makes us feel suspicious. Like, wait a minute, why are you trying to? First off, I ain't even asked you for this, but um, like, where is this coming from? And so getting away from that, that kind of like hustle culture, and then depending on where you're at, I'm not gonna, I ain't gonna name no cities, but sometimes you just look at folks and it's like you seem like a scammer, and and it's it's come up uh several, several different times where when you're divorcing that idea of it's all about the money and only about the money. When you're taking care of people, the money will follow. It will be there. And it's just money, just make some more. Yeah. And I know it's easier said than done. And that that mindset shift and that shift of focus. Uh, I I find that some of the most successful people that I know personally, that is where the shift came in when they put their their focus on the people, on the results, on uh growing others. And then like the the fund started coming at hand over fist. And and I've also experienced watching people do the opposite of that, where you know, they they were so focused on the money because of being in a uh a desperate position or being in a position of lack where the focus became the money and not the product, not the quality of the service. The focus was no longer the people. And I'm like, hey, hey, I I can actually tell even when you're doing your pitch, yeah, you're by the book, it's perfect, but it's coming through that right now, you're not in the mindset or the heart posture to care about the people. Right. And and that's who you need right now. So I can't wait to get my copy of the book. Um, because this is something that I've seen both sides of it. And so I and with the again, with a title like that, how can you not pick it up? And I would recommend that even if you haven't experienced such a thing from from one side or the other, I would still say pick the book up so that you could possibly prevent yourself from being that person that you get trapped in that hustle culture. You get trapped in that mindset of it's money, money, money, and you forget about the people. Right. And and so that you don't have to waste space in your in your brain with thinking those negative thoughts of like, oh, well, that's how rich people get rich, is is taking advantage of people, not reframing that thought into there are rich people who got rich by solving a problem. That's right. That's where the focus needs to be on how the problem was solved, and the focus needs to be on the people. Uh, I think one of the companies and the scenarios where it's most widely accepted, and it's probably because it is tasty, is is that that Chick-fil-A concept that everybody loves to talk about. They they love to talk about how they like the way that they're treated, like the way that they feel, because Chick-fil-A is always my pleasure. But when we uh and and it goes into as well, what the you get what you pay for. Right now, I'm I'm very quick to say, like, mm-mm, I don't eat fast food. I had one job where I ate it every day, and when I stopped working at that job, I kind of just stopped and didn't notice for like three, four years. And I'm like, you know what? I just haven't been because I had it too much. But I still will go to a Chick-fil-A. And even though no, I'm not going to McDonald's, there's a price difference in getting a was it McChicken meal. Back in the day, they used to have the dollar chicken sandwiches. And there was a difference in the way that that sandwich tasted and the way that uh a sandwich and Chick-fil-A tastes. Um, there's a difference in, you know, I can I can go into that establishment not worrying about, you know what, that's okay. I'll stay hungry because I ain't got time for your attitude. No, if if that's the name of the game that you want to play and that's the type of business you want to be in, by all means, go for it. Like your thing. But as far as As a lasting impact and longevity, especially when you're looking at building a small business, the uh principles within your book and the basis of it is very important. And I would recommend it to any uh up and coming entrepreneur, anybody that's thinking about being an entrepreneur, anybody that's thinking about opening a small business, because it can save you so much heartache along the way. It can save you so much time, it can save you so much energy, it can save you from bumping your head and your book in combination with the powerful on-purpose to make it. It ain't no telling how many hundreds of thousands that it can save you by participating in both and uh being under the uh the leadership and tutelage of someone who has been there, done that, got the lesson from it, extracted it. Because y'all know what I say, I don't hurt for free. And it sounds like neither does Dr. Tabitha, because she's making sure that you all are able to gain from her pain and get the lesson. So y'all better get out here, click these show notes uh links below so that y'all can get the reparations on behalf of her pain, on behalf of her lessons and the things that she's already been through and learned. And and I cannot thank you enough for sharing your your story, at least just that small part of it. And you're talking about a bullet point in the list of your life. And I am just blown away at your uh at how courageous you were with building a brand around that and helping so many other people. Where I I can count on one hand how many people that I know who uh would have experienced something like that and said, you know what, I'm going to to turn this hardship and pain into a purpose so that I can impact other people positively. And those people will then impact other people positively. By you making that one decision, you're talking about thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of lives that are being uh impacted, changed, that are being that are being exposed to uh something positive because of your one decision in choosing to to share and teach us from from your your area of uh challenge and and sharing with us those lessons. Instead of sitting back with your feet kicked up in your lawn chair, with your drinking a pineapple with a little umbrella, and it's like watch this, watch this. She has to she have to mess this up. And um that is to me so admirable with with knowing what I know just about people in general. Thank you. So you you always gonna have a spot in my heart just just for being uh that type of person, just for being that type of woman. So I greatly appreciate you the work that you do and uh the courageousness to share. And I need y'all to show her some love, like, comment, subscribe, drop some stuff in the chat, uh, drop some comments below. And if you would like to get uh if they would like to get in contact with you directly, where can people DM you directly? Where can they find you? Where can they find the links for the Powerful and Purpose Summit and uh the links for uh getting the book?
SPEAKER_00Yes, all of it's on my website, drtabitharussell.com. I made it real easy. You can go under the events tab and you can find the powerful on purpose summit. There's also a link to the book right there on the site. The book is revised because we do understand that technology is ever growing and it's fast, and we talk about that a lot as well. Uh, but yeah, definitely we make it easy for you, doctorshavtherustle.com. And this has been amazing. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. I can definitely say uh you you have me blown away for today. And um, I'm I'm gonna be using my own show notes, y'all. Come on when I'm finished typing it up for y'all. I'm going ahead to click the link so that I can get into uh get deeper into uh the the product services and and continue to stay connected and tap in with that. And um you guys make sure that you share this episode with someone that you know needs the information. Share this episode with somebody that you know can help them, even if they don't know.
SPEAKER_00Well, I I just want to share one last thing is that I challenged myself this year. And it and just even sometimes even saying it gives me chills, is that I am on a mission to help 100,000 women in the next five years to become millionaires. It's called the Mahogany Circle. Uh it's on my website. If you're interested, when I say make it Uber affordable for you, yeah, unlike anything, it's teaching you the wealth laws. There's some laws out there that we have not had access to that that's hidden in plain sight that a lot of people are using that we have not that's really been game changing, though. So I just wanted to share that.
SPEAKER_01Okay, awesome, awesome. So again, you guys click the link in the show notes below. You can access also the uh you said mahogany. The circle, the mahogany circle. And you ain't gotta click it if you don't want to. I'm clicking it, I'm going up in there. Let's go. Because if it is her mission to make a hundred thousand women into millionaires, you look a hundred thousand is a lot.
SPEAKER_00That's a lot.
SPEAKER_01I wanna be one of them. Look, let's go. And some people hang out with me on my guys. So that's these assembled. Y'all already know where we're going. Yeah. And uh thank you for coming on to Everybody Can't Go Combo. Thank you. Make sure that you can be one of the ones to go. Make sure the next version of you can be the one to say what and we will see you guys next week for another Everybody Can't Go Combo.
